Triggy – The Wild Herd

Triggy is a beautiful 15.1hh chestnut Welsh Section D mare with flaxen mane and tail. She is 11 years old this year – her birthday is 16th June 2012.

Triggy's past:

Triggy was born in England and was sold several times to new people, separating her from her bonded friends and family. She developed many health problems and despite extensive investigations vets couldn’t find the cause. She also had what is labelled as ‘vices’ but are really just extreme coping mechanisms horses use to help them to adapt and survive in the domesticated world that many humans put them in. Her guardians handed her over to the Sussex sanctuary in 2018 when she was 6 years old as they were unable to help her with her many health and psychological difficulties. As soon as she felt safe in her new home with other horses to bond with she began to settle, release her past anxieties and (as we have seen so often with other animals who arrive at the sanctuary) her immune system was soon boosted by this. She quickly became strongly bonded with Lady, Maisie and Jasper. When the sanctuary in Sussex that she was living at had to close in July last year, Triggy along with all her other herd mates were rescued by us here at Springwood for their safe, secure forever home.

Triggy's life now:

Triggy is part of the Wildies herd and is very closely bonded with Lady, Maisie and Jasper. The four of them hang out in a group together and are usually inseparable, all supporting each other, grazing together, mutual grooming and hooning about having fun. Triggy is very gentle, sensitive and loving. She loves scratches and massages under her belly and down her back legs so will often back into you for this! She loves having a big pile of hay best of all,  but gets a little anxious if treats are on offer in case others try to get them from her – something that probably stemmed from a past incident which we are helping her heal. Triggy is in very good health and the sanctuary, with it’s ethos of giving horses freedom to roam, autonomy, love and respect as well as ad lib hay and holistic care is suiting her very well.
